A Difference I Found Between Eastern and Western Religions

For western religions, I'm referring to Catholicism and Christianity.
As for eastern religions, that will be Taoism and Buddhism(or any gods whom are worshiped by the people here in Taiwan ).

One major difference I found was "the way we pray to god/gods".

As far as I know, if you are a Christian or Catholic, you are free to pray anytime, anywhere, right? Maybe you won't but that's something you can do if you want to. However, when it comes to praying in Asian countries, most of the people pray to gods only when they go to temples, and they'll need a least an image of gods to pray to.
I noticed this difference since last year but I still can't figure out why people believing in different religions pray in different ways.
